Bruce BierhansOctober 25, 2008 2:41 PMLast night, my wife and I saw the movie "W". Interestingly, the words "tort reform" were only mentioned in the movie once; when W was reciving debate/speech coaching from Karl Rove (the arrogant weasel was played quite capably by Toby Jones).
What was striking about the movie was that it was really all about Iraq with barely a mention made of the economy. had Stone known what was going to occur over the last 90 days, the movie may well have had a different, or broader focus. In March 2001, after the Bush inauguration, the DOW was at 9720. Today, we're staring at 8,000 with our financial affairs, and those throughout the rest of the world, in a state of confusion and dissaray. Remember the water going down the toilet in the Tidy Bowl commercials??
Whether or not you view Bush as a major player in this disaster (he didn't create subprime mortgages; he, Greenspan, Wall Street and the Fed just allowed them to happen; forgetting that the loans would, some day, have to be repaid by the borrowers) it is clear that we are worse off than we were before he was president and that our reputation in the world has suffered dramatically.
From my perspective, I guess I have to thank W and his administration for creating exciting new areas of law in which to practice; Predatory Lending, Securities Torts, Real Estate/ Foreclosure defense, Conveyancing Fraud, expansion of Consumer Fraud...well, I guess you get the point. Thank you George. But...excuse me; I'm so excited, I may choke on a pretzel.
