A Worcester Superior Court jury awarded $2.5 million in damages to a Massachusetts woman misdiagnosed with HIV. She was given a powerful array of drug treatments for nearly nine years before discovering she was misdiagnosed.
The malpractice lawsuit alleged the doctor, at University of Massachusetts Medical Center, failed to order the proper tests to confirm the diagnosis even after several blood tests failed to show the HIV virus in her blood.
The lawsuit claimed she suffered a multitude of physical and psychological ailments, including depression, fatigue, weight loss and intestinal problems, as a result of the combination of medications prescribed for her by Dr. Lai and others. The lawsuit accused the doctor of negligence for failing to conduct separate tests to confirm her diagnosis.
The lawsuit was originally filed in 2003 after she went to another another hospital for further tests.
